How to use MiraiSub

Everything you need, from installing the extension to watching your first video with AI subtitles. Most people are set up in under five minutes.

Install the extension

MiraiSub works in Google Chrome, Brave, Microsoft Edge and Chromium on Windows, macOS and Linux.

  1. Open the Install page, choose your operating system, browser and mode, and paste your license key if you already have one (optional).
  2. Click Copy Command, then paste it into Terminal (macOS / Linux) or PowerShell (Windows) and press Enter.
  3. Brave, Edge and Chromium open with MiraiSub already loaded.
  4. Google Chrome needs one extra step: type chrome://extensions in the address bar, turn on “Developer mode” (top-right), click “Load unpacked” and choose the folder the terminal shows (its path is copied to your clipboard).
  5. If you watch in Incognito, open “Details” on MiraiSub and turn on “Allow in Incognito”.
  • Free plan works without an account or key.
  • The installer sends anonymous progress steps so we can see whether installs succeed. Add --no-telemetry to the command to turn this off.

Watch a video with subtitles

  1. Open a video on a supported site and press play.
  2. Click the MiraiSub icon in the toolbar and press “Generate subtitles”, or turn on “Auto generate” so it starts by itself.
  3. The first lines appear within seconds and keep coming as the video plays. Videos that someone already watched load instantly from the shared subtitle cache.
  • Press Alt+Shift+S to show or hide subtitles.
  • Drag the subtitles on the video to move them; “Reset position” puts them back at the bottom.

Choose language, style and look

Open the MiraiSub popup to change these at any time:

  • Target language: the language you want to read (more than 60 languages).
  • Translation style: Auto picks a tone from the content, or choose one yourself, for example Adult (18+), Drama or Anime.
  • Display: Bilingual shows the original and the translation, Translation shows only your language, Original shows only the source.
  • Font size, text color and background let you make subtitles easy to read on any video.
  • Interface language changes the language of the extension itself.

Plans, license key and account

  • Free: 30 minutes of new subtitles per day. Basic: 500 minutes per day. Pro: 2,000 minutes per day, second-pass translation and priority.
  • Buy on the Pricing page (crypto). Your license key is shown on the order page and sent to your email.
  • Activate the key in the popup (“Activate”), or sign in on the Account page and attach it to your account.
  • Sign in to the extension with the same email under Settings → Account to use your plan on every device. There is no device limit.

Invite friends and earn credit

  1. Sign in on the Account page and copy your invite link from “Invite friends”.
  2. When a friend opens your link and buys their first plan, you both get credit.
  3. Credit is taken off your next plan automatically at checkout; if it covers the whole price, the plan is free. Credit can't be withdrawn.

Update or reinstall

  1. Run the same install command again; it downloads the latest version into the same folder.
  2. In Google Chrome, open chrome://extensions and click the reload icon on MiraiSub. Other browsers pick up the new version when they restart.

Troubleshooting

  • No subtitles appear: reload the page, start the video, then press “Generate subtitles” again. Check that the site is on the Supported sites list.
  • “Daily quota reached”: you used today's minutes; they reset the next day, or upgrade your plan.
  • Chrome shows a “Developer mode extensions” notice: this is normal for extensions loaded from a folder; you can close it.
  • Nothing in Incognito: turn on “Allow in Incognito” in the extension's Details.
  • Wrong or out-of-sync lines: use the report form so we can fix the site or the subtitles.

Privacy

MiraiSub only sends the video's address and title (and the tab's audio when needed) when you generate subtitles. It never reads your browsing history, passwords or cookies. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account?

No. The Free plan works right after installing. An account is only needed to use a paid plan on several devices or to invite friends.

Why does Google Chrome need the “Load unpacked” step?

Chrome no longer lets installers add extensions by themselves, so you load the folder once. After that MiraiSub stays installed and updates by running the command again.

Which sites are supported?

Most HTML5 video sites work, and the Supported sites page lists the ones we test regularly.

Can I use MiraiSub on my phone?

Not yet. MiraiSub runs in desktop Chromium browsers on Windows, macOS and Linux.
